Site Characterization and In-Situ Chemical Oxidation Remediation
Antimicrobial-Fogging Unit Sterilization

Penn E&R personnel completed a successful pilot test of in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) at a commercial site where volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were present in soils and ground water at levels exceeding Medium Specific Concentrations pursuant to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection Land Recycling and Environmental Remediation Standards Act. After an injection of approximately 2,100 gallons of sodium persulfate oxidant solution into five wells at the site, post-injection ground water sampling results showed significant overall reductions of VOC mass in the targeted areas, including as much as a 75% reduction of existing trichloroethene mass was observed in the most-contaminated ground water monitoring well. Penn E&R completed a scaled-up ISCO program following this successful pilot test.

KEY PROJECT FEATURES:

  • Design and installation of monitoring/injection wells in area of elevated volatile organic compounds (VOCs)
  • Implementation of ground water monitoring system
  • Preparation of interior of building for ISCO testing
  • Pilot test of ISCO technology
  • Design and installation of vapor mitigation system
  • Communication with United States Environmental Protection Agency
