In-Situ Bioremediation Pilot Injection at Former Industrial Facility
Antimicrobial-Fogging Unit Sterilization

Penn E&R was contracted to complete two phases of an in-situ bioremediation program at a former industrial facility in northeastern New Jersey.  The scope of work involved the drilling, installation and development of 13 monitoring and injection wells followed by the completion of an in-situ bioremediation pilot injection testing program at the site.  This pilot test program used a sodium bromide tracer to assess the solute velocity and radius of influence through the subsurface for subsequent full-scale injections.

KEY PROJECT FEATURES:

  • Drilling and installation of 13 injection wells completed
  • Well boring lithology logged using the Unified Soil Classification System
  • Surge block and pumping techniques used to properly develop wells
  • Pre-injection sampling of injection wells using low flow ground water sampling methods
  • Injection of quick-release substrate (EOS® QR) to provide immediate highly biodegradable carbon and nutrient sources for microbes
  • Injection of slow-release substrate (EOS® Pro) to provide long-term carbon and nutrient resources for microbes
  • Data collected from injection wells used to determine if the aquifer was geochemically suitable for introduction of BAC-9 bacteria
  • Bioaugmentation with BAC-9 bacteria
  • Data collection during injection activities including temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and specific conductivity
  • Post-injection data analysis and reporting
