Characterization/Remediation of Volatile Organic Compounds in Groundwater

In June 1989, during the replacement of a 4,000-gallon unleaded gasoline underground storage tank (UST), a release was identified from the suction line of the UST. Remedial measures were taken in response to the release, but subsequent ground water sampling events confirmed a consistent downward trend of contaminant concentrations in ground water at the site. A 2009 sampling event revealed that benzene exceeded the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Ground Water Quality Standard (GWQS). Based on these results, an enhanced ground water remedial effort via the subsurface injection of the oxygen release compound was implemented to remediate the concentrations of benzene to below NJDEP GWQS.

Penn E&R supervised the injection in 2010, and after performing two subsequent rounds of ground water sampling six and 12 months after the injections, all Volatile Organic Compounds at the site were lowered to the NJDEP GWQS. A Response Action Outcome was then issued to certify completion of the project.
