In-Situ Chemical Oxidation Pilot Test Implementation
Antimicrobial-Fogging Unit Sterilization

Penn E&R was contracted to conduct a soil and ground water investigation, install a vapor mitigation system and implement an in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) pilot test at the site of a former munitions factory turned shopping center located in southeastern Pennsylvania.  Ground water at the site, formerly occupied by a shoe store, showed exceedances of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs).  The goal of the ISCO test was to reduce the concentrations of CVOCs as quickly as possible so the space could be reoccupied.

KEY PROJECT FEATURES:

  • Site and project review meeting
  • Concrete floor inside building removed to accommodate well and vapor mitigation system installations then replaced; system installed to allow for future injections from outside occupied areas
  • Screening of overburden soils completed in areas of suspected CVOC impacts using Membrane Interface Probe sampling tool
  • Installation and development of monitoring/injection wells
  • Ground water sampling to assess pre-pilot test baseline ground water conditions
  • Soil cores collected and screened with photoionization detector
  • Geochemical parameters collected including pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, etc.
  • Implementation of ISCO pilot test program, including injection of 700 pounds of sodium persulfate mixed with 2,100 gallons of water
  • Data analysis and summary report development
